Welcome to Quality Digest's 1998 Gage Manufacturers Guide. When choosing the right gage for your application, it's important to keep in mind three requirements, according to Tom Stewart, sales and marketing manager for Marposs Corp. They include specified part tolerance limits, characteristics to be gaged and the manufacturing or end-product priorities vs. critical characteristics to be gaged. To help with your gage selection, read Stewart's article, "Selecting the Right Gage," which begins on page 35. You might also consider the results of a Marposs survey of 250 metalworking companies that rated various types of gages for their design robustness and reliability; system accuracy, flexibility and user-friendliness; resolution; speed; sensitivity to environmental factors; and more. As would be expected, attribute gages get high ratings for user-friendliness but low ratings for gage R&R. Some types of variable gages, on the other hand, while providing excellent accuracy and gage R&R, may not be as user-friendly or may require special operator training. Understanding your application and the people who will be using the gage is critical to your choice.
