by Dirk Dusharme

Welcome to the Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference show preview. This year's show in Orlando, Florida, July 17-21, will showcase the latest technologies for portable 3-D metrology and assembly from 35 vendors representing nearly 50 companies. From articulating arms and laser trackers to infrared global positioning systems and photogrammetry, you'll see portable 3-D systems capable of measuring everything from a turbine blade to a Boeing 777.

This year's show also reveals a trend toward laser-guided assembly, where laser projection systems take the place of templates for component placement or feature locating, in some cases providing both 3-D assembly assistance and component measurement.

Tying everything together, of course, is software. Advances in real-time data capture from almost any 3-D metrology system combined with advanced point-cloud analysis have greatly increased companies' ability to instantly verify a product's dimensional accuracy or alignment compared to a CAD model.

As interesting as the products are, the highlight of the CMSC is the variety of application-specific white papers that will be demonstrating how a particular 3-D technology or, more often, combination of technologies, has been used to solve measurement problems. Here are just a few of the white papers that will be presented:

Multiple reflection techniques used to measure and model a British cannon recovered from the battle of Yorktown

Basic to advanced CMM skills for Southern California manufacturers

High-speed noncontact measurement solutions

Large-scale metrology instrument performance evaluations at NIST

Underwater photogrammetric verification of nuclear fuel assemblies via natural-feature measurement

Multisensor coordinate metrology

Awin-win solution for metrology interoperability

Measuring thruster location and direction for NASA's STEREO solar science mission

Close-range photogrammetry: beyond industrial metrology

Optically jointed probing systems for large-volume coordinate metrology

The following is a list of exhibiting vendors along with a brief description of their products being shown at this year's CMSC. The table on page 21 will help you locate vendors with products of specific interest to you.
