The Automotive Industry Action Group hosted a conference on radio frequency identification (RFID) in Livonia, Michigan, on Nov. 4. The use of RFID is increasing in the auto production industry, and the conference examined ways it’s helping streamline the inspection process. Representatives of DaimlerChrysler Corp., General Motors Corp., Michelin North America Inc., Avery Dennison and the federal Department of Defense attended the conference to discuss how they use the technology. The key topic was a newly revised AIAG standard affecting RFID use, which potentially provides a blanket RFID solution for both the automotive and retail industries.
“Although companies are interested in the technology, some are unsure how to apply RFID or integrate it into their existing automatic identification and data capture systems,” says Linda R. Plawecki, AIAG acting executive director. “Automotive suppliers need to see real-world deployments to understand how to make the technology work for them. The summit demonstrates how automotive companies and other industries are using the technology in conjunction with their present automatic identification systems to further improve traceability.”
