In my August 2013 column titled “Beethoven’s Fifth and ISO 9001:2015,” I commented on the ISO 9001 Committee Draft (CD). As is typical of me, I wasn’t soft. Now the interim draft international standard (DIS) is available for voting on by ISO members, and I’d like to offer my opinion about this latest revision as well.

I could go back to my previous comments and review them against the changes between the CD and the DIS. Or, I could start anew, which is my preference. Aside from not wanting to re-read what I wrote 10 months ago, I expect readers would prefer a fresh look rather than being fed leftovers from the previous piece.
The 2015 update process seems to have changed significantly compared to previous ISO 9001 updates, where scant differences could be seen as the standard developed from drafts to final form. Perhaps ISO is more focused on the ever-changing market—which includes its own market as well.
