Several of the polished gears are still standing on carpeted pedestals shortly after the InnoTrans—the world’s most important railway transport event. They were developed and manufactured by Henschel to help trains deliver their passengers quickly, safely, and reliably. One of the locomotive axle gears presented at the trade fair, for example, will be used in Russian trains for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Based in Kassel, Germany, Henschel, which produces gears for plastics processing machines, for streetcars and trains, and engine test benches for Formula One racing engines, recently landed a major order. Henschel’s director of quality management, Bodo Kohlmeyer, has no doubts as to why. “Our quality and precision will not be imitated any time soon,” he says. Kohlmeyer invested in new measuring technology just a few months ago to ensure this technological edge.

Reliable measuring technology is vital to production. “The constantly growing customer demands for even higher quality and accuracies require a reorientation of the processes regarding the procurement of mid-sized and large gear housings,” explains Kohlmeyer. Henschel has set up its own housing production facility to meet these demands.
