On July 29, 2010, gauge pioneer Robert F. Edmunds Sr. died at his home in Farmington, Connecticut, at the age of 94. Edmunds spent his life perfecting the science of measurement by developing and advancing numerous measurement products used throughout many industries.
Born in Loudon, New Hampshire, in 1916, Edmunds graduated from Keene State College in 1937 and taught high school math for 13 years. He was fascinated with precision manufacturing and measurement devices in particular. In 1950, Edmunds founded Edmunds Gages as a parts supplier to Pratt & Whitney. The Edmunds Gages line started with simple ring gauges and expanded to electronic “columns,” which measure parts using air pressure or super-sensitive electromechanical probes. The company has gone on to innovate other gauging technologies, including automatic process gauging systems.
