(AIAG: Southfield, MI) -- In 2003, AIAG launched an effort to take JT—a 3-D data format for enabling product visualization between software applications—and facilitate its transition from a proprietary de facto industry standard to an open industry standard. JT is a flexible, lightweight, CAD neutral format that can be created from most MCAD applications, allowing full representation of relevant model information.

From 2003 to 2009, AIAG’s collaborative engineering steering committee has worked closely with its global partners to ensure that the JT transition to JT Open is transparent and that in the end, the industry is the entity that manages the future direction of JT.
In September 2009, JT Open was accepted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and released as an ISO publically available specification (PAS).
After the initial discussions at AIAG, the JT effort was transferred to the JT Open Consortium. JT Open Consortium is a community of software users and vendors committed to the widespread adoption of a single, open, and preferred 3-D visualization platform. This entity is also the body that facilitated and furthered future JT direction.
