Let’s take a look at takt time and cycle time in the enterprise resource planning software, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. Elsewhere I’ve noted the common misunderstanding in lean terminology between takt time and cycle time. At first it seemed confusing in AX as well. Hopefully, this can bring some clarity.

There are five flavors of takt time in AX:

• Average takt
• Minimum takt
• Maximum takt
• Required takt
• Actual takt

These are set by production flow version for overall pace of the entire flow (i.e.,  the value stream) and not by activity (process). We’ll look at each later on.
