Leading European research bodies and open source projects recently secured European Union money to assess the quality of open source software. Software Quality Observatory of Open Source Software will build tools to enable open source projects and software companies to benchmark the quality of applications’ source code.
The Athens University of Economics and Business will lead UK-based Sirius Corp., the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, KDE e.V. and ProSyst in Germany, and KDAB in Sweden in:- Delivering a plug-in–based quality assessment platform
- Developing software metrics for quality indicators
- Publishing a league of open source software applications, categorized by quality
- Releasing its output to stimulate business interest
SQO-OSS aims to prove that software that publishes its source code and is free can outperform expensive, brand-marketed programs.
