Red River Army Depot recently won the Department of Defense’s highest award for depot-level maintenance, and it credited its lean Six Sigma program for the recognition of its High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle Recapitalization Program, in which depot employees streamlined their vehicle overhaul and remanufacturing processes.
Lean Six Sigma helped the depot increase its production rate from three to 120 vehicles per week, reduce safety accidents by 88 percent and obtain a 99.7-percent positive customer service rate. The depot predicts that it will realize more than $100 million in net cost avoidance because of the improvements.“This is a well-deserved recognition,” says Col. Douglas J. Evans, depot commander. “This dedicated work force strives each day to support the warfighter with the best equipment possible.”
The award will be formally presented at the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards banquet on Oct. 2 in Reno, Nevada. For more information, visit www4.army.mil/news/article.php?story=9437.
