“Project identification and selection is a disciplined, structured process for identifying improvement idea opportunities, translating the most promising ideas into project charters, and prioritizing and releasing the project charters to Black Belts for execution,” says Steve Santos, NAVSUP lean Six Sigma deployment director. “Value-stream mapping uses a clear, consistent set of project evaluation criteria to ensure alignment with the organization’s strategic goals and priorities.” The first events ran through Sept. 22 and engaged process champions at several Navy supply sites. There are currently 28 lean Six Sigma projects underway within NAVSUP.
“Lean Six Sigma, as the enabler of NAVSUP’s products and services transformation, systematically reduces variability and waste in business processes while reducing or eliminating defects and lowering the cost of doing business,” Santos says.
NAVSUP’s primary mission is to provide the U.S. Navy with quality supplies and services. It is headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and employs a worldwide workforce of more than 24,000 military and civilian personnel.
