A new standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization aims to help avoid security threats to international trade. ISO/PAS 28000:2005, the specification for security-management systems for the supply chain, outlines the requirements to establish, implement and maintain security management systems, including those aspects crucial to the supply chain. This includes financing, manufacturing, information management, and the facilities for storing and transferring goods between modes of transport and locations.
“The publication of ISO/PAS 28000:2005 is a major security initiative,” says Capt. Charles Piersall, chair of ISO/TC 8, which developed the standard. “It’s designed to enable better monitoring of freight flows, to combat smuggling and to respond to the threat of piracy and terrorist attacks, as well as to create a safe and secure international supply-chain engine.”
The standard can be used by any size organization in the manufacturing, service, storage and transportation sectors, and at any stage of the supply chain. It’s compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
