(Solartron Metrology: Bognor Regis, West Sussex, UK) -- Solartron Metrology, part of the Electronic Instruments Group of AMETEK Inc., a global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, has been selected to custom-design dimensional gauging probes for the 25 antennas that Vertex Antennentechnik GmbH, a leader in satellite communications, is providing to the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) astronomical observatory being developed in the Andes mountains in Chile. The array site is located at 16,500 feet above sea level, where temperatures range from a minimum of –20°C to a maximum of 12°C. In addition to the cold, the antennas are subjected to high winds, vibration, and other stresses that less robust probes were not able to handle.
