Formed in 1993, the FSC is an independent, nonprofit organization tasked with promoting responsible and sustainable foresting practices, helping protect forests worldwide. Chain of Custody (CoC) certification tracks FSC-certified material through the supply chain, covering all stages of timber processing, transformation, manufacturing, and distribution. Most important, FSC CoC certification provides evidence that products using forest-derived materials, including paper, wood, sports equipment, clothing, cosmetics, packing materials, pharmaceuticals, and more, originate from responsibly managed forests, and that they comply with the ecological, social, and economic requirements of the FSC-certification systems.
Accredited FSC CoC certification can also be used to verify compliance with public or private procurement policies and specifications, such as credits for the U.S. Green Building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, or the European Union’s Ecolabel scheme for furniture.
