The year is 2033: The owner of a planned high-rise in a big city is looking to build prefabricated modules with recyclable, low-carbon materials. Work is expected to begin as soon as possible, so the contractor can’t afford to spend a great deal of time figuring out how much of each material will be needed to complete the project. Throughout the project, the owner expects the entire project team to use artificial intelligence-powered construction software to sift through relevant information across thousands of pages of documents in mere seconds.

With so many elements making up modern construction projects, AI will be an inevitable solution to help keep things on track and on budget. “With all those things combined, I think you’re about to see huge changes,” says Patrick Murphy, chief investment officer at Coastal Construction. “And in 10 years, I think it’ll be an unrecognizable industry for the most part, compared to today.”

What does it mean to "understand"?

"Togal.AI’s ChatGPT models understand the context and intent of the queries."

"Contractors and owners alike won’t truly feel comfortable with AI until they understand how it works."

Ah, but contractors and owners alike do understand how AI works. If you asked them, they could guess their way through a convincing answer that’s more correct than incorrect, which is exactly what ChatGPT models do when they supposedly “understand” the context and intent of queries. If understanding is key to the effective use of these tools, then maybe we shouldn’t ascribe “understanding” to a pile of statistical relationships, lest we understate the limitations of the models whose guesswork we rely on.
