With so many elements making up modern construction projects, AI will be an inevitable solution to help keep things on track and on budget. “With all those things combined, I think you’re about to see huge changes,” says Patrick Murphy, chief investment officer at Coastal Construction. “And in 10 years, I think it’ll be an unrecognizable industry for the most part, compared to today.”

Ah, but contractors and owners alike do understand how AI works. If you asked them, they could guess their way through a convincing answer that’s more correct than incorrect, which is exactly what ChatGPT models do when they supposedly “understand” the context and intent of queries. If understanding is key to the effective use of these tools, then maybe we shouldn’t ascribe “understanding” to a pile of statistical relationships, lest we understate the limitations of the models whose guesswork we rely on.
