Corrosion is an insidious problem worldwide, costing industries and governments billions of dollars each year in prevention and remediation while simultaneously taking critical equipment and infrastructure out of service. According to a study commissioned by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, the direct effects of corrosion cost U.S. industry and government $276 billion annually.
A recent NCMS initiative has created a corrosion risk-based assessment, a dynamic survey that helps quantify the corrosion susceptibility and consequence of equipment and infrastructure. Its results can help users identify vulnerabilities early in the design process when corrosion mitigation steps can be more effective. While the tool was developed for U.S. Army assets, it is widely applicable to a broad range of high-value assets, including bridges, buildings, industrial equipment, utility systems, and more.
