During their training, students learn about basic lean, Six Sigma and theory of constraints principles and tools, including value-stream mapping and analysis, visual controls, the 5S workplace, DMAIC and statistical analysis. They also take part in exercises to promote team-building and creativity. The program opened on Oct. 17. NAVSEA requires a specific number of Black Belts to lead the Navy’s extensive continuous improvement efforts. In fiscal year 2006, the Lean Six Sigma College expects to graduate 44 students from its first “flight” of Black Belts, along with approximately 88 Green Belts.
The college will also provide three-day Lean Champion training for managers and others to sponsor process improvement projects and events. Eighty-eight Lean Champions are expected to graduate from the program in fiscal year 2006.
Course curriculum for all of the college’s offerings will use guidance from industry leaders such as Raytheon, GE, Minolta and Ford. For more information, visit www.navycompass.com.
