The number of applications to the 2006 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award significantly increased, with 86 applicants compared to 64 from last year’s event.A major gain in the number of health care organizations applying for the award, along with the addition of a new nonprofit award category are the reasons for the applications spike, says the Baldrige National Quality Office.
The numbers are as follows:
- Manufacturing industry applicants: 3 in 2006, 1 in 2005
- Service industry applicants: 4 in 2006, 6 in 2005
- Small business applicants: 8 in 2006, 8 in 2005
- Health care industry applicants 45 in 2006, 33 in 2005
- Education industry applicants 16 in 2006, 16 in 2005
- Nonprofit applicants, a pilot program: 10 in 2006
