The right combination of trees can result in better air, as well as reduce greenhouse gases, according to researchers at the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
The scientists at SUNY Syracuse report that the ideal mix can reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds such as isoprene.
“Trees are aesthetic, they help control runoff, they affect the microclimate,” said Allan Drew, a forest ecologist. “We can make the air a lot healthier for people to breathe. By modifying the planting mixture and using recommended management proctices, we could reduce the carbon emissions.”
