We have recently covered a lot of ground on the topic of measurement system analysis (MSA). We talked about the basics of MSA, the potential study, the short-term study, and the long-term study. At this point you should have a pretty firm foundation in the importance and methods of good MSA studies for your research and production, as well as a practical tool to help you in doing measurement system analysis—the file "MSA Forms 3.22.xls" (gauge repeatability and reproducibility worksheets)— which is a free download from Six Sigma Online. In this article, I am going to tie up some loose ends and then talk about a frequent question, “Is MSA even possible with a destructive gauge?”

Hi Vivek, and thanks for reading.
.
You should only do MSA on things that measure something important to your process - basically any measurement you make that has value. When ramping up an MSA effort in an area where it hasn't been done before, you might prioritize by performing a short-term, or even a potential MSA on your critical measures. You might be surprised at the results of even so basic a test.
.
But don't stop there - moving into long-term MSA is how you assure yourself that the measurements you are getting still relate back to reality.
.
With a balance, you are likely to be able to use the forms and procedures from my previous articles. You can use the Excel form from the article in your MSAs. Let me know how it goes!
