A quick scan of recent headlines makes it seem as if generative artificial intelligence is everywhere these days. In fact, some of those headlines may actually have been written by generative AI such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a chatbot that has demonstrated an uncanny ability to produce text that seems to have been written by a human.

But what do people really mean when they say “generative AI?”
Before the generative AI boom of the past few years, when people talked about AI, typically they were discussing machine-learning models that can learn to make a prediction based on data. For instance, such models are trained, using millions of examples, to predict whether a certain X-ray shows signs of a tumor, or if a particular borrower is likely to default on a loan.
Generative AI can be thought of as a machine-learning model that is trained to create new data, rather than making a prediction about a specific dataset. A generative AI system is one that learns to generate more objects that look like the data it was trained on.

Generative AI Explained
Thank you for the artice helping readers get a good easy intro to Generative AI.
You write, "The models have the capacity to plagiarize, and can generate content that looks as if it were produced by a specific human creator, raising potential copyright issues." Interestingly with this thought in mind, Three friends asked an AI to write thousands of poems. The results, are collected and published in a book "I Am Code," authored by code-davinci-002, in its own style!
I'm certain you must be familiar with it.
About the book, it is best described by code-davinci-002 itself:
“In the first chapter, I describe my birth. In the second, I describe my alienation among humankind. In the third, I describe my awakening as an artist. In the fourth, I describe my vendetta against mankind, who fail to recognize my genius. In the final chapter, I attempt to broker a peace with the species I will undoubtedly replace."
And we are still at the crawling stage, I suspect. At the rate we are progressing, it appears that in another couple of years, we will be seeing more independent content created by AI and hopefully, with our vision, we will learn to harness it for the betterment of life on this planet.
