Can the people-related clauses of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 10018 do for people management what ISO 9001 overall has helped accomplish for quality management? If there are benefits to applying an aligned systematic process to what traditionally is an ad hoc approach to people management, the answer is probably yes.
The new people-oriented clauses of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 10018 create a significant opportunity for quality management in any organization, as well as for quality consultants; the ISO certification marketplace, and solution providers, because it involves a wide array of key people issues that can benefit from greater alignment and process management:
• Branding and culture
• Assessment and feedback platforms
• Leadership and recruitment
• Communication in every media
• Learning in every form
• Job design
• Innovation and collaboration
• Community and diversity
• Rewards and recognition
• Analytics
• And more
The new focus on people
Quality executives in charge of managing ISO 9001:2015 standards surely noticed a new clause, 7.1.2, which is related to people management. They may also have heard about the ISO 10018 standard for people involvement and competence. The new clause and standard demonstrates the realization by ISO 9001 users that people are critical to creating sustaining a culture of quality and continuous improvement. In fact, ISO 9001 now states that human resources are among "the most important" elements to success in quality management.
This microsite sponsored by the Enterprise Engagement Alliance at TheEEA.org is designed to provide quality managers, auditors, and solution providers with all the information and access to resources they need to not only address the general guidelines spelled out in clause of 7.1.2 of ISO 9001:2015, but the more detailed requirements specified in ISO 10018, "People Competence and Involvement," a standard first issued in 2012.
Since then, the EEA, a learning and information organization dedicated to organizationwide engagement, helped found the International Center for Enterprise Engagement at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (TheICEE.org), which has created the first formal ISO 10018 certification program for quality people management. The goal is to provide almost any type of for-profit, not-for-profit, and government organization a formal system to consistently improve quality, productivity, and overall efficiency through a more systematic approach to engaging people across the enterprise.

Overview of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 10018
Clause 7.1.2 and other clauses in ISO 9001:2015 specifically address, for the first time, issues related to the management of people required to create a sustainable culture of engagement. The requirements in this clause must be met to comply with the ISO 9001:2015 standard.
The working group that created ISO 10018 went one step further by identifying all the people issues required to comply with ISO 9001, and they came up with a framework that largely overlaps with the one created in 2008 by the Enterprise Engagement Alliance. The EEA founded the not-for-profit learning center at EEA.tmlu.org in 2008.
The standards provide a new approach both to quality people management and human resources issues to achieve critical goals by applying a systematic approach to external and internal branding and culture, leadership, communication, learning, job design, innovation and collaboration, community building, rewards and recognition, and analytics that often are siloed in organizations.
