Has anyone else noticed how every pricey light bulb now has a life-span estimate? From a marketing perspective, I do love the concept: Invest more up front, but save on energy and materials costs over the long run. Seems like a win-win situation. But is it really?

When one of our kitchen ceiling halogen floodlights expired last spring, I decided to play consumer reporter. I replaced it with a $13 GE energy-efficient 1+ Year Life 60 W Indoor Outdoor Floodlight. The box promised a “1.4 Year Life,” based on three hours of use per day. To remember exactly when I installed the bulb, I hid the packaging and receipt on the soffit near the fixture.

Shedding Light on the Life of Light Bulbs
Thanks for bringing this issue to light (pun intended). No matter who the vendor is, they all advertise that the new bulbs will last longer and save us money. Not so. I seem to be replacing the CFLs just as often as I replaced the incandescent bulbs. I am all for saving energy, but I believe we should have been told the real cost upfront.
GE Spanish conversion
I have a picture of a GE LED floodlight that claims 22.8 years of life. Just under that, it reads in Spanish: Dura 13.7 años.
So in GE's mind, there is a conversion factor of 0.6 when converting "English" years to "Spanish" years. I think this might agree with your 2/3 life expectancy experience. The advertised life expectancy will be close to reality in Spanish speaking markets!
May be broken broken promises i the new rule
I agree with the comments, i´m tired for changing bulbs at a one half or third of the "estimated" life. But my worst experience with energy (and cost) saving devices is with Radio Shack's alkalyne batteries: some year ago I bought a 3-pack offer of batteries with promised shelf life by September 2018. Two months ago I noted that the batteries in one pack wich I kept closed was leaked. I went to the store where I bought them, and employers told me there was no warranty; after some moments I claim loud, alerting other clients, they exchange my package for a new one. However, two weeks later I noticed sadly that the batteries from the other two packages were also leaked, but inside two costly (also energy saving) LED lanterns. I had not energy myself to go back to the store, my simple decision, nevermore buy RS batteries!!
