Our ISO Management Rep Is Leaving. Should I Call 911?

Your ISO management rep is leaving the company, and you have yet to reassign the post. If you’re wondering whether there are any formalities that must be followed, don’t worry. There’s no need to hit the panic button. With some simple planning, you can ensure your management systems remain in shape and in conformance to the ISO standards for which you’ve worked so hard to achieve certification.

First things first: Appoint an interim rep

If you are not sure whether you have the talent in-house to replace the ISO management rep, or if you have decided to hire a replacement, then the first thing you want to do is assign an interim rep, since there is no telling how long the search may take. The interim ISO management rep will be the point of contact with your registrar for the time being and should take note of any questions that come his way.

Hi David, Thanks for your readership. Requirement of having a "Management Rep" vary from standard to standard. For example in the ISO 27001 standard under section 5 Management Responsibility, the ISMS standard ask for "management to provide evidence of its commitment by establishing roles and responsibilities for information security", however it does not specify anywhere to have a Management Rep. More often than not though, a Registrar auditor will expect a point of contact with the organization and typically that person will be called a Management Rep, but again, not all standards require this. In this example you could have the Chief Information Officer be the point of contact and not have that title of Management Rep. Just make sure to read your standard because if you get an auditor that insist on seeing who is the Management Rep, he/she will expect that you identify this somewhere, either on an org chart, job description etc. So you will have some explaining (training) to do. As far as ISO 9001, yes, it is required.
