Some Grief, Some Joy

Back in 1956, Dean Martin recorded a song that was No. 1 on the Billboard Chart for six weeks. It also turned out to be Martin’s biggest hit ever. That song was “Memories Are Made of This.” As our American pastime now turns to the World Series, I thought of the many memories I have of our Detroit Tigers, who every now and then made an appearance in the Autumn Classic, as it is called. But like any event, there are always disappointments, and as Tiger fans we sure have experienced our share. As Martin’s song so aptly states, “Some grief, some joy, memories are made of this.”

In 1968 our Tigers were pitted against the St. Louis Cardinals in a monumental showdown between two of the league’s best pitchers—Detroit’s Denny McClain and the Cardinals’ Bob Gibson. As it turned out, Mickey Lolich was the hero of the series and was voted the Most Valuable Player after winning three games. Keep in mind, the Bengals won the series after being down three games to one.

Rangers fan Bill?

It was pretty clear to me that you're a Tigers fan first and foremost, as am I. But I wonder about this Rangers fan part. Is it because the Rangers have always been your second favorite team? Or are you, like me, just happy to have a new team in there? After all, any team that beats the Yankees is always my second-favorite team!

Texas Rangers

I grew up in SEK, so the Knasas City A's now Roaysl and the StL Cardinals were my favorites, since I am now in OKC, I am a Texas Rangers Fan--our AAA team (OKC 89er's and recently the Oklahoma Redhawks) was up until next year (Houston Astros 2011) an affilitae of the Rangers (at least while we were here in OKC). in the last few years, a Colorado Rockies fan, as we lived in the Denver Metro area for five years and went to several Denver Bears games (now N. O. Zephyrs). As of last night (10/28/10) the Rangers weren't doing well. I hope that when they get to Arlington on Saturday, they will show the Giants who is boss. I am normally a National League fan, but when it comes down to Texas and California, I vote Texas. We don't have cable or satellite service, so we paid the $9.95 to watch the TBS boadcast games over the internet. 19 in screen vs the 46 in, not as good, but it was baseball.
