Lots of discussion this time of the year as to whether we should wish people a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday. Evidently there is a cottage industry staffed by people who are offended by anyone uttering the words “Merry Christmas.” Frankly, I think there are people who anxiously wait to be offended every day so that they can emerge from their otherwise empty lives and vociferously complain.

People have carried the anti-Christmas thing so far as to rename the trees in homes and malls and stores the “holiday tree.” Well, have you ever considered what would happen if we allowed this opinion to impact even our treasured Christmas songs? Here’s what would happen:
“I’m Dreaming of a White Holiday”
“The Holiday Song”
“Rockin’ Round the Holiday Tree”
“You’re All I Want for the Holiday”
“Do They Know It’s a Holiday?”
“Merry Holiday, Darling”
“Please Come Home for the Holiday”
“It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like a Holiday”
“Blue Holiday” (sung by Elvis)
“Nuttin’ for the Holiday”
“The Holiday Waltz”
“All I Want for the Holiday are My Two Front Teeth”
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Holiday”
“The Twelve Days of Holiday”

Well Said
Bill,
Thanks for this column. I agree with you. It's as though saying the words 'Merry Christmas' could kill. Have a little respect and tolerance for those of us who celebrate Christmas.
